Things to read on European ambition and policy reform
15 August 2025
Over the last few years I’ve been encouraged to see lots of interesting new writing on economic growth, scientific progress and new technologies. It feels like there’s real intellectual and policy momentum building around progress studies, abundance liberalism and effective accelerationism – particularly in the US, but also increasingly in the UK.
I think Europe could do with (a lot) more thinking like this. The European policy debate is very well served for diagnoses of our problems.1 But when it comes to the audacious ideas required to create pressure for change, or the radical but sensible policy prescriptions required to deliver meaningful progress in people’s lives, there is much work to do.
That said, there’s a growing number of people thinking and writing about progress from a European perspective. On this page I’ve started to collect some of the things that have caught my eye recently; if you’re interested in the future of Europe then do check them out (and let me know what else I should add to the list!).
